What is EMDR?
EMDR is an evidence-based therapeutic modality that has been proven to be an effective treatment for trauma.
The goal of EMDR is to reduce distress and strengthen adaptive beliefs through processing the circumstances/memories that are unresolved and causing significant impairment to an individual’s quality of life.
EMDR was originally developed for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, but is now effectively used for a multitude of conditions including anxiety, depression, addictions, panic attacks, phobias, sports performance, etc.
What does EMDR therapy involve?
EMDR therapy addresses past memories and present disturbance along with making plans for future actions.
Treatment takes place over the course of eight phases where memories connected to your negative beliefs are identified, reprocessed, and then a positive belief system is integrated to have a more balanced and adaptive approach to life.
A benefit of using EMDR is that it does not require one to “relive” memories.
How long does EMDR take?
This is highly dependent on the individual and the amount of trauma experienced. The more severe and numerous the adverse life experiences are for a person, the longer the treatment can take.
Although, it must be considered that the cost of not taking the time to address and heal from these experiences can be much more time-consuming and diminish one’s quality of life for indefinite amounts of time.
A personal note about EMDR
I have used EMDR with my clients for nine years – and its effects are profound, to say the least.
One rarely considers how our negative beliefs can impact our everyday lives. When a person can transform their negative beliefs into healthy adaptive views, there is a domino effect.
Relationships improve, people often find better employment situations, finances can improve, and overall satisfaction with life is vastly improved. While EMDR is not a magic bullet and it takes a fair amount of work on the client’s part, the return on your investment can be limitless.
